POSITION SUMMARY:
The Teaching and Learning Specialist works closely with the principals, teachers and other school based staff to improve the academic achievement of all students by providing support including professional development, modeling and observing classroom instruction, and providing feedback to teachers. The position requires a track record of excellence as a classroom teacher and exemplary skills in developing, implementing and assessing instructional strategies to improve overall achievement. Additionally, the candidate will possess a working knowledge of data based problem solving and be well versed in the use of instructional technology for all students. Teaching and Learning Specialists shall use instructional research and strategies as they coach teachers in successful implementation of the curriculum in order to ensure all students have access to high quality instruction aligned to the NC Standard Course of Study.
QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES:
- Bachelor's degree required with advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of five years teaching experience with a proven track record of positive impact on student achievement in the classroom.
- Experienced in modeling lessons, developing and/or facilitating staff development preferred.
- Masterful knowledge of content curriculum and best practices.
- Highly developed presentation skills.
- Knowledge of effective staff development models for adult learners that lead to increased student achievement.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Considerable human relations and human development skills alongside the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Good technical skills with technology and presentation tools.
- Ability to analyze statistical data, complete and maintain accurate records and develop meaningful reports from that information.
- Ability to plan and evaluate strategies for improving instruction.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
Instructional Program Support and Professional Development
- Ensure teachers and administrators are familiar with any changes to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, CIA staff, department chairs, and school administrators in the development and delivery of instructional programs.
- Maintain a current understanding of the theory and practice of research-based best instructional practices.
- Develop rigorous, standards aligned lessons which include the integration of instructional technology to strengthen implementation of the curriculum, meet unique student needs, and support differentiated instruction.
- Model lessons and demonstrate teaching strategies in classrooms for the purpose of teacher observations and improved instructional delivery.
- Make regular classroom visits and provide teacher feedback and coaching to improve instruction as well as to address implementation issues.
- Collaborate with teachers on program improvement and instructional interventions for students who are at-risk of not meeting federal, state, or district performance standards.
- Collaborate with the Testing and Accountability Department to support teachers in the use of student performance data (including subject achievement data) to improve program effectiveness.
- Work with teachers to effectively use formative district benchmark assessments to guide classroom instructional interventions based on data analysis.
- Collaborate with other central service departments, and school based staff as needed to support and address learning needs of all students.
- Support school-based professional development.
- Participate in regular professional development to improve knowledge and skills.
- Disseminate information regarding educational research and significant development on the state and national level in the assigned content area.
- Coordinate and manage storage and distribution of instructional materials and resources.
- Perform other related work as required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with parents, staff, and community members.
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, grasping, kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess a valid NC driver’s license.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, teachers, students, administrators, community members, and others.
