JOB DESCRIPTION

 

 

POSITION:  Exceptional Children Behavior Specialist

 

LOCATION:  Exceptional Children Programs (School Locations TBA)

 

SALARY:  Teacher’s Salary Schedule

 

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:  11 Months

 

REPORTS TO:  Executive Director of Exceptional Children

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES:   

  • A Bachelor of Arts or Science (or higher) in applied behavioral sciences, psychology, social work, sociology, education, or mental health related field is required.
  • Experience in providing behavior services (e.g. functional assessment, behavior intervention plan, and crisis intervention) for students with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other behavior disorders.
  • Minimum of five years teaching experience in a classroom with students in the special education classroom.
  • Must possess valid North Carolina teaching license.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan, organize and prioritize own work to meet deadlines and accomplish tasks within established timelines, including maintaining accurate records and files.
  • Maintain an orderly work environment and perform tasks in a prescribed and safe manner.
  • Conduct comprehensive functional analysis and behavioral assessments.
  • Write effective behavioral assessments.
  • Develop consultation relationships with special and general education service providers.
  • Effectively present complex information on behavior, behavioral assessment, and implementation of behavior plans to staff.
  • Intervene and model effective behavioral interventions with special education students, district staff and administrators.
  • Maintain proactive measures and provide target interventions supports.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct staff development training for school staff.
  • Work with children and adolescents that have behavioral, learning and social challenges.
  • Work with a variety of service providers and agencies.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality on job related matters.
  • Familiar with and experience in the IEP process including development of IEP goals in team meetings.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Respond promptly to requests of area principals; provide needed information, assistance, training, materials and resources.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and professional working relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Working in school environments, providing consultation and training to teachers and assistants, including the adaptation of curriculum and materials for students with severe behavioral challenges.
  • Conducting functional assessments and developing behavioral support plans as part of individual education plans, following federal and state guidelines.
  • Conduct classroom observations to assess program needs and make recommendations for instruction and training.
  • Maintain professional skills and knowledge.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with parents, staff, and community leaders.
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, grasping, kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion. 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Strong interpersonal relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral forms.
  • Ability to develop and compile a variety of records and reports.
